A little story on the Cuban Blockade: In September 1962, I had just finished Fire Control school and was waiting on my brother's ship (USS Power) to return from the Med. I had temporary duty aboard the USS Yellowstone (destroyer tender) in Mayport, Florida. One night just before taps in October 1962 the ship PA system stated that the following personnel should report to Personnel ASAP, my name was included. We, about 20 sailors, were assigned to several Destroyers as soon as we packed and turned in our bedding. Shortly after 2300, I was aboard USS Harwood DD861. I was assigned a bunk, showed where the head and mess deck were; then I was informed that I would be standing the mid-watch in the Optical Director. For the next 30 days we stood 4 hours on, 4 hours off. As we were sailing pass Miami, General Quarters was sounded. The talker informed us that "This is no drill, this is no drill." Luckily the planes coming in were identified as friendly. What a way to go to sea for the first time.
