While not considered a "shipmate," per se, when I boarded USS Harwood, it was my first Navy ship (besides YPs at USNA). She hosted my "Youngster Cruise" during the Summer of 1964. I recall sleeping in crowded bunks and being shuffled around to various enlisted watch stations while staying out of the way. I recall most vividly visiting Southampton, Antwerp, Oslo and Le Havre, from which I enjoyed a trip to the Scottish Highlands, hosted by a wonderful lady named Cunningham-Graham, a formal reception in Antwerp, dining with a family in Oslo and sightseeing in Paris. To this day, the overseas adventure provided me by USS Harwood remain one of only three such adventures - all Navy.
